Ground Search and Rescue

Ground search and rescue refers to all SAR situations that take place on dry land and do not require special technical skills or equipment.  GSAR incidents, especially missing people, represent the majority of the operational tasks responded to by BVSAR.

GSAR is also the minimum level of training obtained by BVSAR operational volunteers.  Typically, volunteers who have not fully completed the requirements of the GSAR course are not sent on operational tasks, or are sent out under the direct supervision of a qualified volunteer.

GSAR training includes instruction and evaluation in the following topics:

· Wilderness survival

· Wilderness navigation (map & compass)

· First Aid

· Rope skills

· Tracking

· Equipment and Ready Packs

· SAR Operations in B.C.

· Helicopter safety and operations

· Wildlife safety

· Swiftwater Awareness

· Avalanche Awareness

BVSAR members transport an injured subject.
